“Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me!”
Dear Families:
Jesus is not saying we are to turn our backs on our families and friends. He is not saying that we should not enjoy the good things in life. Instead, we are asked to think of what sacrifices we are willing to make to be people of God. What is the cost to us of being a Christian? Has our fidelity to the Gospel ever cost us money, friends, opportunity, or family harmony? The negative press and the adverse comments the Church is subjected to are actually signs of hope. They tell us that what we have to say is not met with indifference. They tell us that our lives and our faith have something to say about the world we live in. When people oppose the teachings of Christ and the inclusion of God in their lives, we know we have hit a nerve. To follow Jesus is to set our faith on fire so that we can burn brightly for all to see.
Let our faith in our Merciful Lord, who is really present in the Holy Eucharist, light up the darkness right here where we live: in our homes, in our workplaces, in our community, and in our church. Let our faith reach out across the world as we ease the burdens of
others. No, Jesus does not preach hate. Jesus wants us so connected to God that we radiate His love.

“¡El que no toma su cruz y me sigue, no es digno de mí!”
Queridas familias:
Jesús no dice que debamos dar la espalda a nuestras familias y amigos. No dice que no debamos disfrutar de las cosas buenas de la vida. Más bien, se nos invita a reflexionar sobre qué sacrificios estamos dispuestos a hacer para ser personas de Dios. ¿Qué nos cuesta ser cristianos? ¿Acaso nuestra fidelidad al Evangelio nos ha costado alguna vez dinero, amistades, oportunidades o la armonía familiar? Las críticas negativas y los comentarios adversos a los que se ve sometida la Iglesia son, en realidad, signos de esperanza. Nos indican que nuestro mensaje no suscita indiferencia. Nos dicen que nuestras vidas y nuestra fe tienen algo que aportar al mundo en que vivimos. Cuando la gente se opone a las enseñanzas de Cristo y a la presencia de Dios en sus vidas, sabemos que hemos tocado una fibra sensible. Seguir a Jesús significa encender nuestra fe para que brille con fuerza ante los ojos de todos.
Que nuestra fe en nuestro Señor Misericordioso, realmente presente en la Sagrada Eucaristía, ilumine las tinieblas allí donde vivimos: en nuestros hogares, en nuestros lugares de trabajo, en nuestra comunidad y en nuestra iglesia. Que nuestra fe llegue a todo el mundo mientras aliviamos las cargas de los demás. No, Jesús no predica el odio. Jesús quiere que estemos tan unidos a Dios que irradiemos su amor.
